Breaking Stereotypes in Science

I'd like to introduce Dr. Einstein. He is a scientist, or at least what I think a scientist looks like. Dr. Einstein was part of an activity that my class was tasked with. My fellow classmates and I was asked to draw a scientist at work and that was it! After the activity, we established that most people see scientists as stereotypical. Most of the drawings were male with glasses, lab coats, beakers, tubes, and spikey hair.

Only one picture that the class drew was female. This created the conclusion that most people associate scientists with being male even though a lot of scientists are female. For example, Marie Curie was a well-known Polish and naturalized-French physicist and chemist who conducted important pioneering research on radioactivity. She is now known as one of the most influential women of all time. As I develop my knowledge of science and ways to teach science, I hope to break these stereotypes and develop a sense of unity and wonder among my students.
